Key terms used in the study of Patañjali, Darśana, Yogaśāstra and Aṣṭāṅga-Yoga.

- Patañjali (Patañjali) –Sage ‘Patañjali’ is to Yoga what Sage Vedavyāsa is to Vedas. Sage ‘Patañjali’ collected the knowledge about Yoga prevalent at his time.
- Darshana or Darśana à ‘दृश्यते अनेन इति दर्शनम्’ ।
‘Dṛśyate anena iti Darśanam’. That, by which we see / know (the essential nature of things) is Darśana. Though the word ‘Darśana’ is translated as Philosophy, but it is not correct, yet it serves the purpose of translation.
- Patañjali’s Yogadarshana (Patañjali’s Yogadarśana or Pātañjalayogadarśana Patanjala Yoga Darshana, Shri-Patanjala-Yoga-Darshana) – The Yogadarśana propounded by Sage Patañjali. Sage ‘Patañjali’ collected the knowledge about Yoga prevalent at his time and compiled it in the text ‘Yogadarśana’, which is basically an Art and Science of Living a harmonious life to realize the highest goal of life i.e. Liberation.
